Our hospice team

What makes our hospice different? The fact that we are staffed almost entirely by volunteers.

“Brother Jacob and his colleagues at Skanda Vale are not paid professionals, but extraordinary people who have dedicated their lives in the service of others – this is obvious to all who use the current facilities.” - Phil Burr – West Wales Prostate Cancer Support

Our hospice is a service project, run by the monks and nuns of Skanda Vale multi-faith monastery. Our hospice team work full time for free, supported by a group of dedicated part time volunteers from the local community. Our hospice team is fully qualified and insured, with many years practical experience. We do continuous in-house training (conforming to all recognised standards) and run DBS checks for everyone.

Healthcare professionals

We have a large number of healthcare professionals from all over the UK who plan to volunteer with us for periods of up to a month, in our new inpatient unit. We have purpose built accommodation at Skanda Vale for hospice volunteers, and can provide all meals and transport. Please get in touch if you'd like to join our team.

Palliative care consultant

Dr Pat Purcell, palliative care consultant for Hywel Dda University Health Board, joined our team in July 2013 as a volunteer, to help us develop our new inpatient hospice project and integrate our service into existing palliative care resources in our area. She also helps us to partner with other regional care services, to improve coordination of care for patients.
