Family carers naturally want to be near their loved ones during an end of life care journey, but need their space to retreat to from time to time.
We know how important it is that all the family can be together, and to be involved in giving care when possible. Our new inpatient hospice includes a self contained family accommodation unit – as with all our services, there will be no charge to stay overnight.
Generally we encourage families using our respite service to take the opportunity to have a much needed break. With that in mind, the accommodation has been created primarily for families of patients who are with us for end of life care, but exceptions can sometimes be made for families of our respite patients. The new accommodation is based in the garden, away from the main building, and features the following:
- Sleeping for up to 2 adults
- Kitchenette with toaster, kettle and fridge
- Bathroom with sink, toilet and shower
- Free WiFi
“I have advanced metastatic prostate cancer with a short life expectancy. On the horizon, I can see my last days and worry about the extra work that will be imposed on my wife / carer. I am not aware of any residential hospice facilities in this sparsely populated rural area, and I have been really pleased to hear that Skanda Vale is planning to build such a unit which will complement local health care facilities. It is a great relief to me to hear that this facility may be available when the time comes. It promises to be a loving, caring, homely environment with light and airy rooms in a beautiful rural setting.”Alun – respite day care patient
“The companionship and social interaction provided in the beautiful and peaceful setting of the Hospice was vitally important to our wellbeing, as our lives were very stressful at that time.”Susan Maxwell – carer for respite day care patient
