moving and handling trainer

Location: Skanda Vale Hospice, Saron, Llandysul, SA44 5DY

Hours: Flexible: Usually around 1–2 days per month

Supported by: Administration Lead / Head of People

At Skanda Vale Hospice, how we care matters as much as the care itself. We take things slowly, pay attention, and treat every person with dignity. Safe moving and handling is a quiet but essential part of that.

As a volunteer Moving and Handling Trainer, you help our team feel confident, capable, and unhurried when supporting patients. You’ll teach respectful, gentle techniques so that challenging tasks are done smoothly and almost unnoticed, while everyday actions—helping someone stand, adjusting a pillow, using a hoist—are carried out safely and with real presence.

Your work protects patients, safeguards volunteers, and strengthens the culture of care that holds our hospice community together.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading friendly and practical training sessions that introduce safe ways of moving and handling people and equipment.
  • Demonstrating techniques clearly — from helping someone reposition in bed to using hoists, slide sheets and wheelchairs with ease and respect.
  • Creating space for learners to ask questions, practise, make mistakes, and build real confidence.
  • Keeping training materials up to date and aligned with current best practice and hospice policies.
  • Recording attendance and competency sign-offs where needed.
  • Supporting the wider team in nurturing a safe, steady and caring working environment.

What you’ll bring

  • A recognised Train the Trainer qualification in Moving and Handling (People Handling).
  • Sound knowledge of safe handling practices, with the patience and care to teach them well.
  • Clear, kind communication, and an ability to make learning feel relaxed, inclusive, and grounded in real experience.
  • A commitment to the ethos and volunteer-led spirit of the hospice.
  • An enjoyment of working closely with people across the whole team.

Training & support

  • A full hospice induction, along with ongoing support from the Admin Lead and Head of People.
  • All equipment, materials and guidance needed to deliver your sessions confidently.

What you’ll gain

  • The satisfaction of helping volunteers develop skills that safeguard both patients and those who care for them.
  • A chance to deepen and share your professional knowledge in a warm, steady, and genuinely supportive environment.
  • Opportunities for ongoing learning and development.
  • A sense of belonging and friendship within the Skanda Vale Hospice community.

Volunteer accommodation

  • We offer free overnight accommodation at either Skanda Hafan Guesthouse or at Skanda Vale Ashram for volunteers travelling from further afield.
  • Find out more about free accommodation for healthcare volunteers.
